About

EMILY AULT

Born 1961 in London, I have a joint honours degree in English and Russian from St Andrew University (1983). I worked in television, film and arts administration before moving to France where I raised three children and studied painting.  Back in the UK I studied Illustration part time at Central School of Art (1998) and Children’s Book Illustration at Chelsea College of Art in 2000.  In 2004 I was accepted onto the Children’s Book Illustration MA programme at Cambridge School of Art. In 2008 I began a personal painting project which was accepted for exhibition at The Highgate Gallery and nearly sold out.  Since then I have concentrated more on painting than illustration, though recently I have been exploring printmaking: etching aquatint and lino cuts.

My approach to painting is strictly immersive and most of my work is made outside, en plein air. My concerns are a sense of place and a moment in time.  How I feel, the weather, the atmosphere are as important to me as the physical components of a scene.
